Maritimes Heritage Wheat Project

In 1998 Dr. David Patriquin and graduate student Jennifer Scott began wheat field trials in Nova Scotia. Wheat hadn't been grown in the Maritimes for over forty years. They found that Acadia wheat did well as did Red Fife wheat. Linking up with Speerville Mill the organic farming group began to define a process that would be copied on Canada's west coast five years later.

Dr. Patriquin found that Red Fife provides an excellent shading for weed control. Read his paper "Small plot comparisons of phenology, yield, disease, and weed tolerance of three heritage and two newer cultivars of bread wheat under a high fertility organic regime in eastern Canada"

David and Jennifer found alot good information too about baking quality and milling quality of heritage wheat. Some of the articles are posted on ths site. Contact Jennifer for more information jen@ns.sympatico.ca

Jennifer runs the Heliotrust Foundation dedicated to conserving heritage wheat. It's the first center in Canada that is dedicated to conserving heritage wheat.
